 The Location
The North Byron Shire Parklands, locally
known as Yelgun Flats, is located on Tweed Valley Way/Jones Rd, North
Ocean Shores & Wooyung. It is considered a suitable site because of its
large land size of 660 acres, it has a minimal number of neighbours and
good road access that is adjacent to the Yelgun motorway interchange,
1.5kms from our proposed carpark entrance.

Belongil Fields / North Byron Shire Parklands Site Comparison
In contrast to our current site at Belongil Fields, the North Byron Shire
Parklands is far more suitable to host the Splendour in the Grass festival.
The current festival venue in Byron is within close proximity to the most
densely populated parts of the shire.
North Byron Shire Parklands is in comparison, almost uniquely, positioned to allow optimal sound management. As indicated in the following diagram, the actual “festival grounds” at North Byron Shire Parklands are set well back from populated areas. Furthermore, the sheer size of the site [660 acres] and the presence of an almost completely self contained valley with in the site, allow for optimal onsite containment.
The
Wildlife Corridor
Having suffered at the hands of previous owners [as evidenced by numerous
Court orders] there is much that can be done to enhance and build upon
the natural environment contained within and around the site. The Billinudgel
Nature Reserve represents one of the last remaining coastal habitats of
significance in the region and the North Byron Shire Parklands site is
a key habitat link to the world heritage listed Mount Warning Caldera. The
North Byron Shire Parklands project offers a real opportunity to
substantially improve habitat connectivity in this currently fragmented
landscape.
The importance of this corridor to the biodiversity of the area
is potentially enormous. At present habitat patches in the locality
are variously fragmented by past clearing and grazing practices. We are
currently liaising with both the NPWS and the RTA to facilitate the prerequisite
land swaps that will contribute to the construction of a continuously
vegetated corridor. We also plan to improve the habitat
connectivity within
the North Byron Shire Parklands site by strategic plantings which will
bridge gaps and effectively link existing forest patches for terrestrial
fauna.
