Community Benefits Currently Derived from Splendour in the Grass

All events have the potential to not only provide entertainment but also be great community assets if managed correctly. Splendour In The Grass is an example of an event realising its popularity and recognising an opportunity to use the festival as a vehicle to create positive outcomes for the Byron Shire community.

Beyond the obvious economic benefits for local business - North Byron Shire Parklands
  • We provide jobs for over 670 people ranging from casual, part-time and full time permanent employment.

  • Since 2002 Splendour In The Grass has given $135,500 to various Byron Shire community groups including Byron Environment Centre, the Youth Activities Centre, Byron Youth Services and the Belongil Restoration project.

These benefits have been focused geographically on the areas most directly impacted by Splendour In The Grass

We have chosen to benefit youth organizations who are very much in need of financial assistance & social recognition, we also support green projects. Jobs have been created, services provided and environmental programmes have been made possible in Byron Shire.

  • Over the last 5 years and with no financial subsidy or support from local, State or Federal Government we have created a program open to all youth in the Byron Shire. We choose 6 applicants between the ages of 16 & 25 yrs who attend weekly classes learning about the music industry and its various facets, they then receive on-site work placement during the festival under direct supervision from our senior management learning the various aspects of event management.

  • We offer a $5,000 New Emerging Artist grant to be administered via Lismore Regional Gallery for aspiring North Coast Artists. Last years winner was Remo Vallance, from Possum Creek, who produced an inflatable, internally lit sculpture entitled ‘Rocking Gnomes’

  • We create opportunities for local bands, performance artists & DJ’s which assist their national profile and increase the size of their following through crowd exposure at Splendour In The Grass. They also get paid.

Each year Splendour In The Grass has increased its level of commitment to the community and as the event develops those opportunities will grow. Developing a permanent event site will create an excellent platform to realise the potential community benefits.
